IRREGULAR MIGRATION: DORMANT POLICIES LEAVE HUMAN TRAFFICKERS OF HOOK.

Coordinator for National Platform on Migration, Samuel Nii Dodoo, says lack of implementation of policies on movement of people makes it difficult for human traffickers to be traced.

At a media training and public sensitization on ECOWAS Free Movement and Migrant Right in Kumasi, he lamented migration as a major international concern is causing havoc to Ghana. He says it is understandable youth would migrate from the green lands of Ghana to deserts to seek greener pastures. What is worrying is exploitation of such people by unscrupulous persons who appear to have a field-day. If it could have been ope rationalized it would help to stem the ongoing issues because the national migration policy has not been implemented.

Doctor Delali Badasu is at the University of Ghana Center for Migration Studies. She believes government’s planting for Food and Jobs initiative must go with expanded rural electrification to give the youth a choice. Lack of electricity and other social amenities in the rural areas cause migration, if governments and some migrants will come together through the provision of remittances it will only be a matter of choice to migrate.

An immigration official, Superintendent David Essien, says ECOWAS member states must respect the 90 day protocol on free movement of people. If one wants to stay beyond the 90 day he or she needs to get a visa.
